Youth Banner Project Receives "Magic Maker" Award

The Montevallo Legacy Project had the great honor to be recognized by Montevallo Main Street on June 23 at the Chamber of Commerce’s Montevallo Community Awards dinner for our work with the downtown Black History Month Youth banners.

We were so excited to receive the “Magic Maker” award presented by Main Street’s Executive Director, Courtney Bennett. Thank you, Main Street!

Executive Director of Montevallo Main Street Courtney Bennett remarked at the ceremony:

"Main Streets are for everyone.
 
Montevallo Main Street’s mission is to strengthen the heart of downtown while promoting historic preservation and supporting the arts.  
 
Celebrating our community’s diversity is one way that we work towards the goal of “liberty and justice for all.”
 
Tonight, we recognize our partners with the Montevallo Legacy Project for their work recovering, sharing, preserving, and building appreciation for hidden histories and little-told stories of Montevallo’s past.
 
One of the projects that highlights this best is the Black History Month downtown banner series debuted in early 2026 featuring original artwork from 11 Montevallo youths. These banners will be displayed on Main Street every February for the next few years to lift up our Black community and give our youth a chance to see the mark they are making on downtown.
 
We also recognize MLP’s work in supporting the development of the African American Heritage Trail, as well as their Untold Stories of Black Montevallo, and Little Franklin’s Town.
 
Main Street is proud to work alongside MLP towards a more inclusive future. Congratulations to Montevallo Legacy Project, our 2026 Main Street Magic Maker!"
