Come celebrate Juneteenth in Montevallo at George Dailey Park!
The City of Montevallo’s Parks & Recreation Board will host their 4rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration from 10 AM – 1 PM at George Dailey Park (245 Selma Road) on Friday, June 19.
This free-admission event will feature a program, children’s activities, community organizations, and live musical dance performances. Lunch will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring their own chair(s).
Introducing: 2026 NAACP/MLP Scholarship Awardees
We are proud to announce that MLP in partnership with Shelby County NAACP has awarded $8,000 to the winners of our annual scholarship program. The competition holds up graduating seniors in Shelby County public schools who have shown a commitment to advancing racial justice and the potential to be outstanding community leaders. Learn in their own words the goals and aspirations that guide these winning students.

The sanctuary of Montevallo Presbyterian Church was filled with music, reflection and celebration on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 8, as community members gathered for Montevallo’s third annual Black History Season celebration.
Hosted by the Montevallo Legacy Project, this year’s program, titled “Black Joy: Now, Then and Beyond,” centered on joy as both a historical and present-day force within the African American community.
The Heart of Black Herstory
Join us on February 21st, 2026, between the hours of 10am-1pm at Parnell Memorial Library for “The Heart of Black Herstory”. This program hopes to explore and celebrate the Black Women of Alabama who have made history.
Refreshments and activities will be available and children are welcomed so drop on in!
Save the Date: Celebrating Black Joy!
“Black Joy Now, Then, and Beyond,” sponsored by the Montevallo Legacy Project, will take place Sunday, February 8, at 4pm in the Presbyterian Church on Shelby Street. Featured speaker is native son Bishop Elvin B. Thompson, Pastor of Riverside Apostolic Church in Augusta, Georgia and founder, with his wife Valerie Thompson, of the Center for African American Memory. He will be joined by his sister, native daughter and joy warrior Joyce Jones.
Beyond Good Intentions: Becoming Trustworthy White Allies
In this year’s Martin Luther King Memorial Lecture, Melanie S. Morrison will explore how white people who aspire to be antiracist allies can develop the courage, strength, and resiliency to become what Rev. Dr. Ruby Sales calls “long distance runners for racial justice.”
