Dedication of Almont Elementary

The City of Montevallo, in partnership with Shelby County and the MLP, is proud to announce the unveiling of a historic marker commemorating Almont Elementary School, which served African American children in the Montevallo area from 1939 until full integration in 1970.

The dedication ceremony is on Sunday, Oct 19, at 2:00 at Almont Park. A reception, including an opportunity to share memories, will follow at Almont’s Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.

Officially adopted by the City in August 2022, the Heritage Trail includes markers, plaques, signage, and digital resources that highlight significant sites of Black history and culture in Montevallo and the surrounding area. The initiative seeks to tell a fuller story of our shared past, creating a lasting legacy for future generations.
