Fun night for kids at Parnell Library celebrating Alabama Black History
BLACK HISTORY WITH AN ALABAMA ACCENT
Feb 27, 5:30, Parnell Memorial Library in Montevallo
Black History with an Alabama Accent promises a fun-filled evening for kids and families, sponsored by Parnell Library, APT, and the Montevallo Legacy Project.
"We're excited," says Parnell Director Marissa Wilson. "In the past, we’ve recognized Black History Month with a book display, but this year, we're adding hands-on activities and free books and food."
Highlights include a Gallery of Alabama Heroes, Black history posters by local youth, and a storytelling corner. Kids can enjoy coloring books, make-and-take crafts, African drumming, soul food samples, and visionary folk art by a Bibb County artist.
Thanks to Falcon Art Supply, the coloring table will offer crayons in 24 skin tones. "How great to color skin that looks like your own, no matter how light or dark," says Kathy King, co-founder of the Legacy Project. She recalls, "When I was a kid, there was just one skin color, 'Flesh,' as if all kids had peach skin." “Today it’s easier than ever to find a color that reflects the rich diversity of our population," adds Tonia Mayton.
Attendees can also purchase Little Franklin's Town, a children’s coloring book featuring Black history in Montevallo, and check out the latest volume of Untold Stories of Black Montevallo.
And rumor has it, Harriet Tubman may make an appearance!
Don’t miss this free celebration of local Black history—books, food, and fun for all!
