Come celebrate Juneteenth in Montevallo at George Dailey Park!
On Thursday, June 19, The City of Montevallo, along with the MLP and several local organizations, is hosting the third annual Juneteenth celebration.
Festivities will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at George Dailey Park, including dance and musical performances, children’s activities, and the unveiling of a new marker on the Montevallo African American Heritage Trail, commemorating the Selma Road Black Business District.
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, that all enslaved people were free. Juneteenth is now a federal holiday, celebrated nationwide with festivities and reflections on African American history and culture.

The City of Montevallo highlights George Dailey Park as an important part of Montevallo’s history and culture. “George Dailey Park, located in front of Montevallo Middle School, embodies a rich heritage in Montevallo. George Dailey was the first African American City Council member in Montevallo and is credited for beginning the movement for the City Council to be elected by districts. Montevallo Middle School was formerly Prentice High School, Montevallo's first and only African American high school from 1950-1970. George Dailey was the last principal of this school.”
