The Shelby County chapter of the NAACP, in partnership with the Montevallo Legacy Project, is proud to continue our annual scholarship program dedicated to empowering future leaders of our community. This scholarship opportunity is open to graduating high school seniors of public schools in Shelby County who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing social justice and the potential to be outstanding community leaders.

Scholarship Information

Offered by: Shelby County Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Montevallo Legacy Project. Open to graduating seniors of public schools in Shelby County who have shown a commitment to social justice and the potential to be outstanding community leaders. 

Scholarship Amount: Awards totaling $8,000. In past years, awards were given to 3-5 recipients, depending on the merits of the applications.

Use of scholarship: To be applied toward tuition for first year of post-secondary study.

Eligibility:

  • Graduating Shelby County high school students planning to attend an accredited 2- or 4-year institution (including vocational/technical schools) 

  • Active involvement in community service or extracurricular activities

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in the area of social justice and equality. 

Deadline for submission: 5 pm, February 27, 2026

Selection Process: A panel of judges will assess applications based on the following*:

  • Leadership (25%)

  • Mini-essays (25%)

  • Academic record (25%)

  • Community Service/Extracurricular Activity (15%)

  • Recommendations (10%)

*Rubric available on request.

Application Procedure: All of the following must be received by February 27, 2025:

  • Completed application form

  • Copy of transcript (official or unofficial)

  • Copy of acceptance letter (in its absence, a statement of educational plans for the fall)

  • Two letters of recommendation (sent separately by recommender)
