Photo Gallery: Black History with an Alabama Accent

The evening of Feb 27, 2025, Parnell Memorial Library in Montevallo hosted Black History with an Alabama Accent -- a fun-filled evening for kids and families organized by MLP in partnership with Alabama Public Television (APT) and Parnell Library.

Highlights included a Gallery of Alabama Heroes, Black history posters designed by local youth, and a storytelling corner where Maxine Morgan enthralled youngsters with stories about soul food.

APT and Parnell supplied coloring pages, free books to take home, make-and-take crafts, African instruments, and MLP presented visionary folk art from Bibb County. A surprise appearance from Harriet Tubman (Ethel Mae Thompson) brought excitement and shared song to the room.

The coloring table offered crayons in 24 skin tones supplied by Falcon Art Supply. "When I was a kid, there was just one skin color, 'Flesh,' as if all kids had peach skin," recalls one of the organizers. “Today it’s easier than ever to find a color that reflects the rich diversity of our population," adds Falcon Art Supply's Tonia Mayton.

The event also launched Little Franklin's Town, an MLP children’s coloring book featuring scenes from Black history in Montevallo.

Parnell Director Marissa Wilson was proud to host the event. "In the past, we’ve recognized Black History Month with a book display, but this year, we've added hands-on activities and free books and food."

Books, food, and fun for all. What a great way to celebrate Alabama's Black heroes!
