Join us on Feb. 2nd for “Stories Our Own Way: Black Creativity Now, Then, & Beyond.”

The Montevallo Legacy Project is proud to announce its second annual Black History Month launch, Sunday February 2, 2-4pm, in Rebecca J. Luker Stage in the Song Center for the Arts at the University of Montevallo. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 1:30.

Creativity Our Own Way: Black Creativity Now, Then & Beyond will feature performances and remarks by Salaam Green, poet and performance artist; Zachary Banks, choir director and vocal performer; and Elvie Schooley, drummers, and students from DRUM the Program, with Joyce Jones, UM Director of Engaged Education and Public Service moderating. A meet and greet with refreshments to follow.

This event coincides with the release of “Untold Stories of Black Montevallo Vol. 3”. These stories initially appeared monthly in Montevallo's Chamber Chatter. From the start, we have sought to give voice and visibility to people of African descent in and around Montevallo. Some stories include dark moments in our town’s history. Taken together, however, the stories display for all to see the dignity, pride, resourcefulness, kindness, and hospitality of the African American community.

We’re also excited to share our newest project, Untold Stories of Black Montevallo for Kids: Little Franklin’s Town! This interactive coloring book invites young readers to embark on a vibrant journey through Montevallo’s history, learning untold stories while creating their own along the way. Stay tuned—more details about this release will be available soon!
