Upcoming Event: Reckoning with Montevallo’s history of slave trading

Join us on Feb 4th at 5:00 PM for "Why We Must Remember: Reckoning with Montevallo’s History of Slave Trading," a talk by Melanie S. Morrison. This event takes place at Meri Moon, 616 Main St., and is sponsored by the MLP and the Alabama Humanities Alliance.

Melanie S. Morrison, an AHA Road Scholar, has done intensive research into her Montevallo ancestors, Edmund King and his daughter Elizabeth King Shortridge. She will share her recent discoveries about the history of slave auctions that took place in Montevallo, and Edmund King's prominent role in that practice. Drawing from historical narratives, she will also describe how enslaved people sought to resist, subvert, and undermine the fracturing of their families.

Melanie believes it is possible to grow ever more aware of the history of systemic injustice without surrendering our capacity for compassion, joy, and hope.
