Celebrate with Us: Unveiling Three Inaugural African American Heritage Trail Markers
The Montevallo Legacy Project, in collaboration with the City of Montevallo, is proud to announce the dedication of three historic markers for the Montevallo African American Heritage Trail, including Ward Chapel AME Church, Mason Hall, and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. This event marks a significant step in our efforts to honor and preserve the rich history of Montevallo’s African American communities.
Join us on Sunday, October 20th, at 1:30 p.m. for a program and dedication ceremony starting at Ward Chapel AME Church. The event will continue to The Mason Hall and conclude at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. These markers recognize the profound impact African American citizens have on our city, and their installation is a milestone in the unveiling of the Heritage Trail.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Zachary Banks and the Ward Chapel AME Church Choir, and a reception will follow.
Officially adopted by the city of Montevallo in August 2022, the Trail features markers, plaques, signage, and digital resources that celebrate significant sites of Black history and culture in and around Montevallo, Alabama. This initiative aims to provide a fuller, more richly textured local history, serving as a lasting legacy for young people and future generations.
The Montevallo Legacy Project is committed to uncovering and celebrating the stories of Montevallo’s communities. This dedication is just the beginning of a journey to educate, inspire, and bring our community together in appreciation of our shared history.
This is a unique opportunity to commemorate the trail’s inaugural sites and reflect on the stories of strength, community, and history that have shaped Montevallo. We invite everyone to join us in this historic celebration.
