Recap: Why We Must Remember

On February 4, over forty people gathered at the Meri Moon on Main Street to hear Melanie S. Morrison, an Alabama Humanities Alliance Road Scholar and MLP Research Consultant, deliver a powerful talk titled Why We Must Remember: Reckoning with Montevallo's History of Slave Trading. As a descendant of one of Montevallo's leading slave traders, Morrison offered a compelling act of truth-telling.

"That night was one of the most important experiences I have had doing public speaking," Morrison reflected. "The depth of conversation, storytelling, and testimony that followed my talk was profoundly moving to me." Many attendees felt the same.

Our thanks to everyone who showed up for this vital remembrance. As one participant said, "Remembering our history--fully and truthfully--is an act of justice."
