Shelby County NAACP and MLP present scholarships to 3 local students dedicated to social justice

The Shelby County chapter of the NAACP, in partnership with the Montevallo Legacy Project, is proud to announce the recipients of an annual scholarship program that seeks to empower future leaders of our community. This scholarship opportunity was open to graduating high school seniors in Shelby County public schools who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing racial justice and the potential to be outstanding community leaders.

2024 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS


Kenneth Dukes, President of the Shelby County NAACP award Caley Peterson her scholarship at Pelham High School.

Caley Peterson

An award of $2500 went to Caley Peterson of Pelham High School. She aspires to be a chemical engineer and hopes to inspire other African American women to work towards their dream of working in a STEM field. Peterson said, "It's not about ability. It's about opportunity."

Kenneth Dukes, President of the Shelby County NAACP, and Kathy King, President of the MLP, award Chloe Abrams her scholarship at Vincent Middle High School.

Chloe Abrams

Chloe Abrams of Vincent Middle High School was awarded $1500. Senior class valedictorian, she has set her sights on being a large animal veterinarian and has a strong passion for rodeo and cattle farming.

Kenneth Dukes, President of the Shelby County NAACP, and Bobby "C.P." Pierson award Destiny Burns her scholarship at Pelham High School.

Destiny Burns

An award of $1000 went to Destiny Burns of Montevallo High School. She has high hopes of starting a business and plans to attend UAB to study finance. She wants to have a positive impact on other people of color of her generation.
