Join us on Feb. 2nd for “Stories Our Own Way: Black Creativity Now, Then, & Beyond.”
The Montevallo Legacy Project is proud to announce its second annual Black History Month launch, Sunday February 2, 2-4pm, in Rebecca J. Luker Stage in the Song Center for the Arts at the University of Montevallo.
Creativity Our Own Way will feature performances and remarks by Salaam Green, poet and performance artist; Zachary Banks, choir director and vocal performer; and Elvie Schooley, drummers, and students from DRUM the Program, with Joyce Jones moderating. A meet and greet with refreshments to follow.

Upcoming Event: Reckoning with Montevallo’s history of slave trading
Join us on Feb 4th at 5:00 PM for "Why We Must Remember: Reckoning with Montevallo’s History of Slave Trading," a talk by Melanie S. Morrison. This event takes place at Meri Moon, 616 Main St., and is sponsored by the MLP and the Alabama Humanities Alliance.
Melanie S. Morrison is a seasoned racial justice educator, speaker, and author with thirty years experience designing and facilitating transformational group process. Morrison is currently engaged in intensive research and writing about her ancestors in Montevallo, Alabama, who accumulated wealth from two systems of theft: the violent dispossession of Native people from their homelands and the enslavement of African Americans.



Shelby County NAACP/MLP announce 2025 scholarship
Shelby County NAACP, in partnership with the Montevallo Legacy Project, is proud to announce our annual scholarship program dedicated to empowering future leaders of our community. Open to graduating high school seniors in Shelby County public schools who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing racial justice and the potential to be outstanding community leaders. Awards totalling $5000.
Deadline for application is February 28, 2025.

Shape Our Community's Narrative: Storytelling Internship Open Now!
The Montevallo Legacy Project and the University of Montevallo are excited to offer an internship for August 2024 - May 2025. Join Our Stories, Our Strength to develop storytelling campaigns and organize community events. UM undergraduates are invited to apply for a $2,000 stipend. Click below to learn more and apply!
